The reserve is well-known for the annual Great Wildebeest Migration, during which vast herds of wildebeest and zebras traverse between the Maasai Mara and Serengeti National Park, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle. In addition to the migratory herds, the Maasai Mara Park and surrounding wildlife conservancies are home to a diverse range of resident game, including elephants, buffalos, giraffes, hyenas, jackals, and the big cats: lions, cheetahs, and leopards. Take a break from your drive and enjoy a delicious picnic lunch amid the beautiful scenery.

After an exhilarating day of wildlife spotting, return to your safari lodge in the late afternoon.

FAQ

What is the cost of a safari in Maasai Mara?

The cost of a safari in Maasai Mara can vary depending on factors like the season, the length of the safari, the comfort level of accommodations, and the number of people in your group.

On average, a safari in Maasai Mara can cost between $150 and $1,500 per person per day, with most packages falling in the $300-$600 per person per day range. This typically includes accommodations, meals, park fees, transportation, and the services of a safari guide or driver.

It’s important to note that there may be additional costs for activities like hot air balloon rides or visits to Maasai villages, as well as any optional upgrades or amenities at your chosen lodge or camp.

When planning your safari, we will do our best to give the very best value for money as we match your tastes and preferences. It’s also a good idea to book your safari well in advance to secure availability and potentially save money.

I'm a solo traveller, is there a single supplement?

Some of the hotels charge a single-room supplement and your safari consultant will be able to advise the cost depending on what properties you are staying at.

When is the best time to visit Maasai Mara?

The best time to visit Maasai Mara depends on what you want to see and do. The peak tourist season is from July to October when the wildebeest migration is in full swing, and the grass is shorter, making it easier to spot animals. However, this is also the busiest and most expensive time to visit.

If you want to avoid the crowds and don’t mind the possibility of some rain, the months of April, May, and November can be a good time to visit as there are fewer tourists, and you may get better rates on accommodation and safari packages.

It’s worth noting that the weather can be unpredictable in Maasai Mara, and there may be heavy rain and flooding during the rainy season (April to May), which can make the roads difficult to navigate. Overall, the Maasai Mara reserve is an all-year-round destination and the best time to visit Maasai Mara depends on your priorities and preferences.

What should I pack for my safari trip to Maasai Mara?

  1. Light and comfortable clothing: Pack lightweight and breathable clothing that will keep you cool in the hot and humid weather. Long sleeves and pants are also useful for protection against the sun and insects.

  2. Sun protection: Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from the sun.

  3. Insect repellent: It’s a good idea to bring insect repellent to protect yourself from bites.

  4. Camera & Binoculars: Maasai Mara is a photographer’s paradise, so make sure to bring your camera and any necessary accessories. A pair of binoculars will be provided on all our safari trips.

  5. Comfortable shoes: You will likely spend a lot of time walking and standing, so bring comfortable shoes that can handle rough terrain.

  6. Medications and toiletries: Do not forget to pack any necessary medications and toiletries

  7. Cash and travel documents: Make sure to bring enough cash and all necessary travel documents, such as your passport or ID, and keep them in a safe place.

The key to packing for Maasai Mara is to pack lightly and efficiently, bringing only what you need for a comfortable and enjoyable safari experience.
